Investigation ongoing into reports of birds with signs of bird flu in the north of the Netherlands

Since last weekend, the DWHC has been receiving reports of increased mortality and abnormal behavior among wild birds in the north of the Netherlands. The birds are exhibiting behavior that resembles an infection with bird flu, namely turning their heads in a circle-like motion. The reports are mostly of young swans and greylag geese.

We are receiving reports from the provinces of Groningen, Flevoland, North Holland, and Friesland. The DWHC has had several birds collected from these areas (see map). They are being tested for avian influenza. As soon as the results are available, we will share them on our website.

We ask that you continue to report suspected birds and mammals via our online form, as mammals can become infected by eating infected birds. We are collecting some of the birds for testing so that we can continue to monitor the situation.
