Ziekteverwekker
Coccidiosis is a parasitic infection of the gastrointestinal tract of animals that occurs in both mammals and birds. The disease is caused by single-celled parasites belonging to the genus Eimeria.
Gevoelige diersoorten
The causative organisms are usually species-specific and pose no risk to other animal species and/or humans.
Symptomen dieren
In adult animals, the Eimeria intestinal parasite is often present in small numbers without causing problems. In the case of a severe infestation, animals develop intestinal inflammation, causing them to lose weight and die.
Besmetting dieren
Organisms of the genus Eimeria are common and survive in the environment in a form that is highly resistant to environmental influences (oocyst). Oocysts can still be infectious after weeks (in manure) or months (in soil). In wet, not too cold weather, these excreted oocysts can survive longer and subsequently infect more animals.
Symptomen mens
The Eimeria species found in animals cannot infect humans.
Geografische verspreiding
The coccidiosis species of animals all occur worldwide, although the prevalence of certain species differs.
