Ziekteverwekker
Canine distemper, sometimes termed footpad disease, is caused by the canine distemper virus. This virus is often referred to as CDV, the abbreviation for the English name for this disease: Canine Distemper Virus. CDV belongs to the genus of Morbilliviruses, just like the measles virus and the seal distemper virus, among others.
Gevoelige diersoorten
Canine distemper is a contagious disease that occurs in canids and mustelids. Because dogs are normally vaccinated against this virus, the disease occurs only sporadically in dogs in the Netherlands.
Symptomen dieren
Animals with canine distemper first develop a fever, a runny nose, discharge from the eyes, start coughing, and develop pneumonia. Subsequently, gastrointestinal problems occur, and there is a high risk of vomiting and diarrhea, possibly with some blood. If the virus then attacks the dogs’ brains, they develop symptoms such as head tilting, muscle twitching, seizures, and partial or complete paralysis, ultimately resulting in death.
Besmetting dieren
Canine distemper virus is primarily transmitted through direct contact with an infected animal, or through contact with saliva, feces, and urine. The virus can also be contracted by inhaling infected airborne particles. Infected animals can recover and build immunity. Animals with a compromised immune system usually die within a month.
Symptomen mens
The canine distemper virus is not dangerous to humans.
