Species: Muscovy duck
The Muscovy duck (Cairina moschata) is also known as the Barbary duck and was originally native to Central and South America. In other parts of the world they have been farmed for meat and feral populations have become established in some countries including the Netherlands where they inhabit lakes, ponds and low-lying farmland. Muscovy ducks are surface feeders eating water plants, small fish, crustaceans and insects. They are large ducks with clawed feet and varying degrees of white and black plumage.The males have a large reddy-pink caruncle at the base of the orange to red bill and the wing feathers may have a greenish sheen.
The name Barbary duck is sometimes used to refer to Muscovy ducks bred for meat.
